This is my first dormancy, and I'm willing to admit I'm getting a little nervous watching all my VFT die back, but with those, I know they're supposed to. My concern comes up with my 'Dews. I know some require dormancy, and some don't, and I've even read up in Allen's WONDERFUL caresheet that it's the North American 'Dews that go dormant.

My question is- is there a general rule for how to tell a North American 'Dew from a Tropical 'Dew, or does one simply have to research each individual variety that they own? A general rule would be nice, as I'm lazy  but I'm willing to look up each type if that's what I need to do to make sure that all my plants survive this coming cold season (Ok, I know Victoria doesn't get that cold, but I still prefer the blasting heat of summer).

Well, I keep all of my tropical sundews with my temperate plants all year and they do fine. Even the tropical sundews are fairly hardy against freezing and frost. I'd imagine they'd die easier than temperate sundews or VFTs if you got a hard freeze. I never let mine get frosted or freeze though. I keep it above 35°F and they do fine with that.

In other words, if you're too lazy to figure out which ones are tropical and, therefore, could keep warmer, you can just leave them with your temperates year round as long as you don't let them freeze.

If you'd like to know which species you have that are tropical, I'd be happy to tell you if you list their names.

Thanks for the tip Matt. I've really only got 2 options for my plants- outside, or the spare bedroom, so it's good to know they all should survive if they're in the spare room together :D
