We use Sunshine brand peat moss. I don't know the brand of perlite we use, but typically anything other than Miracle Gro is going to be safe to use. Just look for "enriched" on the bag. If you see that, don't use it.

Hey Matt do you use the Sunshine from Home Depot? I tried it this year and found it had lots of sticks. Do you sift these out?

I have used mostly the Lakeland brand peat moss. Premier is usually available at Lowes or Home Depot and is good stuff too. I have Therm-o-rock perlite

Fertilome is great! I've had problems with the 3 ft³ Premier bale, but many people have said they've used it without problems. I haven't found a difference between perlite brands much except one was extra large pieces that may have been good for the soil, but for some reason it annoyed me. I don't remember the brand name, but I think I got it at Walmart in a pinch.

I use Therm-o-rock perlite and Lakeland peat too, BUT peat quality varies wildly over time, and even by region so it's almost impossible to give a good recommendation. The only surefire way to get high quality peat is to find a place that sells nursery- or grower-grade peat as it is much cleaner and more consistent in quality than consumer-grade peat.

I believe that's what we use to use, but we never sifted anything out. I think the sticks tend to break up the moss and provide a bit of airiness that's good for the roots.

And now that I think about it more, we might use a different brand now. We source it from the local Grange Co-op here in Ashland, Oregon.
