I've been fighting an outbreak of spider mites (even tougher when you can't use the strong stuff because you grow indoors) and have been concentrating on plants with edge-blackening traps. Today I got a chance to take a good look at my Coquillages (one plant, split when I repotted in spring). One piece is growing under "full spectrum" aquarium lights and the other under my regular Bluemax full-spectrum lights. Whatever magic the Bluemax's have, it happened again. Instead of a green plant with maybe a blush of red in the traps, I have a plant with watermelon traps and even red teeth...

I figure the bulbs last about 5 years before they should be replaced. I'm on my 3 set, I think.

I guess this has turned into a ad for BlueMax. My original intention was to show off the bright color that Coquillage is capable of. But BlueMax certainly deserves the credit for the extreme colors of most of my VFTs. I do recommend them highly. They're more expensive than regular tubes but they last a very long time - as I mentioned, I change them every 5 years or so. And as an added benefit, the light they produce shows natural color tones to both the human eye and the camera.
