I am Darren. I have an interest in doing tissue culture Venus flytraps 1 year ago. I gotten some germination of vft seeds here and there but they didn't grow to anything bigger than 2cm even after 5-6months.

I am using 1/2 of the Ms Media with vitamin. Here the composition of the Ms media I used before diluting to 50% strength
Major salts (macronutrients)

Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) 1,650 mg/l

Calcium chloride (CaCl2 · 2H2O) 440 mg/l

Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4 · 7H2O)370 mg/l

Potassium phosphate (KH2PO4) 170 mg/l

Potassium nitrate (KNO3) 1,900 mg/l

Minor salts (micronutrients)
Boric acid (H3BO3) 6.2 mg/l

Cobalt chloride (CoCl2 · 6H2O) 0.025 mg/l

Cupric sulphate (CuSO4 · 5H2O) 0.025 mg/l

Ferrous sulphate (FeSO4 · 7H2O) 27.8 mg/l

Manganese sulphate (MnSO4 · 4H2O)22.3 mg/l

Potassium iodide (KI) 0.83 mg/l

Sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4 · 2H2O)0.25 mg/l

Zinc sulphate (ZnSO4·7H2O) 8.6 mg/l

Na2EDTA · 2H2O 37.2 mg/l

Vitamins and organics
Inositol 100 mg/l
Niacin 0.5 mg/l
Pyridoxine · HCl 0.5 mg/l
Thiamine · HCl 0.1 mg/l
Glycine 2 mg/l

I basically add 4.74g into 2 litre of water and add 30g/litre of sugar and agar to make 1/2MS

I just realised that I am dividing macro and micro nutrients and vitamin by 2 .

Medium i wish to prepare 1/2 MS medium with full vitamins

But for 1/2 MS with full vitamin, does it mean that

(1/2x Macro nutrients , 1/1x micronutrient ,1/1xvitamins)

or

(1/2x Macro nutrients , 1/2 x micronutrient ,1/2 x vitamins)

Does this make any differences on the growth of the plants?I plant to use it on drosera and vft seeds.which do you think is better?

For full vitamins does it refers to this type and amount

Vitamins and organics
Inositol 100 mg/l
Niacin 0.5 mg/l
Pyridoxine · HCl 0.5 mg/l
Thiamine · HCl 0.1 mg/l
Glycine 2 mg/l

I really hope you can help me out here. Thanks a lot!

Warmest regards,
Darren

Neither. It's 50% MS (macro and micro) and 100% MS vitamins.

That's not actually all that bad. Some varieties never get any larger than that in tissue culture.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your reply!
I tried 1/3MS(1/3Macro ,1/3micro,1/3vitamin)

However, the Venus flytraps seedlings grew very slowly. Some even turn yellowish/white. I notice when they are 3-4leaves ,their roots are not even growing into the medium.

Should I increase my medium to 50%?

Anyone have any picture of Venus flytrap seedlings at the age of 2-3months?so I can do a comparison?

Thank you for all your great helps!

Flytraps don't seem to be too picky when it comes to their media. I've grown them on both 50% and 33% MS with full vitamins and they grow well on either. If you were to increase to 50%, the only difference I'd expect to see is that the plants grow more clumped and don't get as large.

Thanks matt!

I will give it a try with 1/2 MS with full vitamins and 1/3MS with full vitamins.

Was thinking if 1/2MS: 50%major,100%minor, 100%vitamins work too?

Because I gotten this pre mixed on hand.only different with 1/2MS strength is the 100% minor instead of 50% minor.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if keeping the micronutrients at 100% would be OK or not.

I've honestly not experimented with changing the media much. Flytraps aren't picky at all. They seem to grow fairly well on nearly everything I've put them on. So I just stick with 33% to 50% MS with 100% MS vitamins.

Your reduced vitamins are probably the reason for your results. Did you replate them after they reached the 2 cm mark? I've read that 1/3 MS with full micro & vitamins is a good for cephalotus and I made a batch and tried it for cephs, but didn't have any success with it (and by that I mean I failed to get a culture started). Never tried it for VFTs though. Be sure to check the ph if you use it because mine kept coming out almost liquid the first couple tries. Below are some pictures of progress using 1/3 MS (macro & micro) and full vitamins for VFTs.

This was the largest I've had a single plant grow, but sometimes they also divide and grow lots of small rhizomes and form a big clump instead. Possibly inconsistencies in my media preparation.
