What happens if you don't divide a VFT just let it grow in a large planter? Will it eventually die?

No it won't cuz even if One part of the plants dies the other divisions won't, even if you don't split them.

You will get a division. But a division in a vft is not usually how someone imagines it when they hear the word. A VFT grows to one side, leaving the old part of the rhizome to the other side. These semi dead parts strike up new leaves if they get enough sun, water, etc.

So it's not as if all of a sudden you have 2 equal sized plants growing from the same spot. You get smaller offshoots from the sides. Depending on how well attached the new rhizome is to the original one, the offshoot may grow quite quickly as it will still share water and nutrients.
