Mine were covered until today, I'm trying to get exactly the conditions I inquired Leah about.

Approximately 50% humidity, around 60-65F temp, mostly stagnant airflow, watering with distilled water to only keep just moist, fluorescent lighting.

I might have a little too much airflow but 60-70% humidity might help compensate. The temperatures are dropping to 50 sometimes.

Best of luck...These little guys are pretty tough. I've gotten one off eBay for $10 and it was a little guy. I've done so much to kill that thing but it's stuck it out and is doing great. I think I've killed it down to the rhizome twice. Once I forgot to water it and it was in a small pot and the other time my light fixture feel on it and burnt all the pitchers. Its came back every time.

When I first got my Cephs. I did keep them on the dryer side. I've mentioned in my Ceph post that I don't like moss around the crown. I've noticed a quicker deterioration in the pitchers which I contributed to the moss around the crown holding in to much moisture. Once I pulled out all the moss my pitchers seemed to last longer, but that could have been my conditions too.

I watered my Ceph thoroughly soaking their media. Even letting the pots sit in water for a couple hours. Then I drained off all the water and waited for the top lay of the soil to dry. Just like watering flytraps. This has worked very well for me. A lot of growers say they haven't had any problem leaving their pots in a tray of water. I've never done that for a long period of time. The most my Cephs. sat in water was a couple of days on hot summer days.

I hope you find success. Once they are happy they grow quickly. Under florescent lights they color up nicely. One other suggestion. If you're anything like I was with my first Ceph you'll look at it every 15 minutes so you may already do it... My suggestion would be to remove the cover once or twice a day to get a fresh air exchange. Doesn't have to be long. This will help with air exchange and may help in prevent mold.

I'll be careful not to over water them. I misted them before putting the cup over them but the sphagnum was pretty moist when I received it so I didn't water them.
I'm going to do like you said once I pot them and surround them with sand

Hi,

I had them in FTS peat/sand/perlite mix and added 1 more set of perlite to it. I try to make a hill shape on the top where the ceph will be sitting so the water will not stay on top too much and they get some ventilation that way. I was following someone's advise that this provides identical the natural enviroment where ceph grows. My future mix will have additional coconut coir chunk, charcoal chunks and river sand for experiment.

If anyone is interested this is what my ceph looks like, it's slightly behind the others in size, but that may have to do with how it's been getting less hydrated since the FTC pots are a bit taller than my others. Either way this guy is looking pretty good, and his flared up pitcher lid is interesting (but not unheard of).

Lovely looking cephalotuses in this topic. I definitely will consider buying one, eventually. They remind me of a mixture of pitcher & tropical pitcher plants. ;)

This thread is a year and some change old. Just wanted to update the cephs I got from Matt back then. They just started putting out adult pitchers and they look amazing :)
