I have extra sphagnum moss and not enough space so I am giving away samples (to fit in small USPS box) for a flat $15 (already includes shipping and handling)
They will be three different species: half cup of red (still in green form, takes 4-6 months to turn red), half cup of green, cup of green. These will be enough to start your own colony.

Put your name on the list and I will do a random number generator to select SEVEN people by 11:59pm EST Friday the 26th, I plan on shipping these out by Tuesday the 30th at the latest. You must be able to pay by PayPal, it's the only thing I'll accept.
*** I am looking for a pink Pinguiculas/a Darlingtonia, so if you have those, I am willing to trade!

INSTRUCTIONS TO GROW SPHAGNUM OPTIMALLY once you get it (in my experience):

First, rinse strands in distilled water.
Layer a substrate of dead long fiber sphagnum moss. (I don't add peat because I like my sphagnum clean)
Lay it flat, and close to each other.
Bright diffused light. The brighter, the better.
Closed container for high humidity. I use saran wrap to cover my containers (or with holes at the top). It does need an occasional airing out.
Distilled water just barely above the substrate level, and flood (above sphagnum) once a week.
Leave it be, and you'll have too much in no time!

UPDATE
Here are the numbers: 9, 3, 4, 2, 1, 6, 7. I chose seven as I have enough moss for that.

1. killerplants4realz passed
2. katya_dog1 PAID
3. tgreene PAID
4. Eric PAID
5. kenspicks
6. David F PAID
7. sbrooks PAID
8. sPacer
9. prox99xpxfjp PAID

You will have until Monday night to PayPal $15 (unless otherwise noted), so I can ship them on Tuesday the 30th. I will PM the winners.
No payment, and it will be given to the next person in line.

Can I ship you cash in the mail? I know you said Paypal only, but if you wait till you get it, you are sure that you get the money before you ship.

If not, I'm out.

I can throw in a heat pack, but i would think it would be fine. Can you please recommend a cheap one? I only see $10 ones on amazon.

I have a very small piece of live sphagnum right now, growing in dead sphagnum, with peat as the bottom layer. It hasn't seemed to grow much, but all of the surrounding surface quickly turns green with algae. I try replacing the algae ridden medium with fresh; same results. Not sure how to prevent this, considering how moist and humid the environment need to be; and the bit of live sphagnum I have in there doesn't exactly appear to be thriving. But I am determined to grow my own sphagnum; that stuff can get expensive! Thanks for the opportunity, Bannister! :D

I always refer to Sundewman and Tamlin when it comes to soil-related pests. Using peroxide and alcohol are a band-aide, rinsing the sand/perlite/peat or other mediums isn't always necessary. If you don't want algae though, it is basically a solution.
