Hello guys!

Glad to find this place, really helped me a lot before I got my first VFT. Here's a few photos of what's growing in the pot.


This was when I just got mine from the nursery, saw a few little ones and thought it had potential to grow many more. Taken about 3 weeks ago. Last week, i was reading up about dormancy and was expecting them to go black, but more little ones turned up and since we live in a tropical climate and it's kinda tricky to induce dormancy (since i'm still new and i read somewhere in our climate here, we just do a dry dormancy) i decided to just skip it this year. Taken today, the small ones seem healthy and a few big ones popped up over the past few days so i guess they're pretty healthy!
Hope to learn more and keep my plants healthy! Do let me know if any of you guys have any tips for growing them best in my climate here, we have no 4 seasons in Singapore, either all sun or rain, which could be a good thing i hope!

When I got to the last picture I was a little curious I noticed all the traps looked triggered and was wondering to myself why that would be.

Uh I definitely would try putting it into dormancy though, shipping that is usually not fun for the plant

I was thinking of putting it into dormancy but like i've mentioned, new ones are growing every other day. Do i still go for it?

Yeah any sized flytrap can go into dormancy and even if it's still growing now, by the time it gets to maybe midsummer next year it will stop growing (I think)

Ok thanks guys for the advice, now thinking what's the best way to do this since the plant has been exposed to warm temperatures. Wouldn't want to "shock" the plant by putting it in the greens compartment of the fridge...

Just a quick note. If you haven't read VFT dormancy particularly the last part of the second paragraph.

I've read it before joining this forum...just that the traps are all still green and growing.

Like one of the replies above, it still needs to go dormant so i'll definitely work something out...once again thank u soo much everyone!

I just wanted to point out that dormancy seems to be triggered due to light rather then temperature. As long as you can manage to reduce the amount of light your flytrap gets down to 10-8 hours a day it could trigger a dormant response. Matt has commented many times that on sunny days his (FTS) greenhouses reach mid 80's F (29C) during dormancy and the plants all stay dormant. They do get a temperature drop at night which helps.

Also, depending on the environment, the dormancy of a flytrap may just be a different growth phase. Here in the U.S., someone in Florida where it doesn't usually get below freezing will just see a change in growth habits. Small traps, broader petiole, and more of a ground hugging rosette, while the older summer growth dies back. There will still be noticeable green growth but just slowed down. Here in the northern parts of the U.S. where it gets well below freezing or a harsher winter, we'll see almost a complete die back or suspension in growth. Point being that in Singapore you're not going to see much die back. I know nothing about Singapore, so I don't know the length of your days or the temperatures during this time of year, but if you recognize the characteristics of dormant growth patterns and what triggers them it'll help you out along the way.

Thanks for this! Clears up a whole lot more. Our average temperature during the day is between 28-32c (which is close to what you mentioned for triggering dormancy) and at nights between 23-27c. Sunrise here is around 6.45am and sunset at around 6.55pm. We have these all year round.

Also my plant sits on the windowsill so it gets a good amount of sunlight between 11am - 4pm.

I will start to bring the plant indoors to reduce the amount of light, before inducing dormancy.

Hello Tish! Where did you get your Vft? Far East Flora?

The local ones i get from World Farm. Far east flora is 1/2 time more expensive. Note the carnivorous plants are cultivated in Cameron Highlands which is very different from Singapore weather. The plant will be diffwrwnt after accustom to our local weather.
