I just recieved a month old Nepenthes alata from ebay. I just want to know if you like my growing conditions. This is my first nepenthes and cutting. It recieves window sunlight and artificial light from 1600 lumen cfl bulbs with 5000 color temperature. I'm going to mist it every two days and give it 14 hour photoperiods. Instructions say not to transplant until roots come out the bottom of the container. How long do you think until it starts pitchering with these conditions? Lastly, its name is Vengevine.

It very much depends on the species. From your photos, it is likely a ventrata. You can confirm after it starts to produce mature pitcher.

A fresh cutting takes ~3 months to resume active growing. Another month to pitcher.

The top of the lid says june 22, 2014 so I assumed it had already taken root and prepared to transplant it into a larger container. It has not. It is a two node stem cutting that has the bottom most portion turned black with two or three little growth points that I'm assuming are roots. Not entirely black, just the growth points coming straight out og where the cut was. So I put it back in its original container and will move it when definite growth shows. Thanks for the fact on timing, I thought it would take a year to pitcher, a few months is much better.

Wow. That is definitely from the same seller mine was (I recognize the cup setup) but mine had rooted already and had 3 or 4 leaves, and no instructions. It's doing well, but definitely no pitchers yet. It is on my windowsill right now and has put out a few leaves. It did take it about 4 to 6 weeks to adjust though.

My nepenthes came with instructions, but I'd still rather have yours, mwatson1, since it's already rooted. At least I'll have the pleasure of having grown a nepenthes from a cutting that didn't even have roots yet. This is one step up from the sundews I grew from seed, which by the way are just beginning to entrap prey.

My Nepenthes alata cutting is not rooting. It has grown a tiny leaf and when the leaf unfurled there was a small vine in its center which is very slowly growing. I decided to remove some sphagnum to check the roots and there are none! Nothing. It is just black where the cut was taken and then yellow and then green on the leaves and new growth.

Hi, I got a cutting for 25 dollars(in NZ), but it was already rooted(kind of). Anyway, some types of nepenthes plants do not make many roots. It all depends on how u treat your plant. I have a friend and all of his plants do not have really have roots, just bulbs. They grow just like normal plants. Also, u could try sealling the pot with a plastic bag to make it more humid for your plant. If u do this, poke small holes onto the plastic bag, so your plant doesnt get to hot. After it has taken, start poking more and more holes into the plastic bag, so it can slowly adapt. Spraying will not help, but might even confuse your plant.
Hope this helps :)

I got mine for eight dollars off ebay. It said that it was free and that the money was for shipping. I'm going to post another soon. I kind of wish I had bought one with roots and pitchers already, but patience is a virtue.

Yea, I am having trouble waiting as well with my nepenthes, as it will still need a month or two to aclimate itself and start growing again. :( I just can wait.
