I was reading in the propagation section of this site about growing new plants from flower stalk cuttings. Have many people tried this and what was your results? If I take the flower stalk and place directly into the media it should take? Simple as that? Or will I require rooting hormone? How long to see any results?

That's the impression I get. Some growers have different preferences as to how long they let the original stalk grow, cutting it into sections, and planting vertically vs. horizontally, but the same general idea stands. Plant the stalk in the media and keep it a little more moist than you would a healthy plant and after a few weeks you can get some strikes. I have also read that rooting hormone does not really affect the success rate positively or negatively.

Also, a major factor in the success is the overall health of the flowering plant.

I stuck a few in a few weeks ago. So far they just turn black. I assume they are dead. I only put them in about 1/4 of an inch. Deep enough or no?

I remembered I did try this a couple of years back but nothing happened whatsoever, stalk turned black and nothing grew... maybe I didn't keep the soil wet enough?

I've done like 9 cuttings already.

Out of about 4 leaf cuttings, 3 have already grown into new plants. And these were pretty bad/dying leaves too. I am so surprised by nature sometimes!

Out of 5 flower stalk cuttings, 2 have molded to death, the other 3 are still alive, but I don't see any growth yet. (These are about a month old I believe. I'll give it one more month.)

At what point does one completely toss out any attempts? I really want my flower cuttings to propagate (since they are from cultivars), but just not seeing any progress!

I'm not sure about vfts but I've gotten my sundew flower stalks, cut them up, and put them in distilled water for a couple weeks, they're all getting roots now

Yeah, Filiformis leaves works great that way.

I cut the stalk on the low giant I got from FTS this spring. I cut the stalk in half and laid one horizontal and the other vertical. I used lfsm and put the pot in a ziploc bag under artificial light. Just the other day I opened the bag and saw some little traps popping up around the vertical piece. Took about 2 months I think. Not sure, I forgot to write the date on the bag.

It definitely takes some time. I've read that laying the cut flower stalks down horizontally or near horizontally works better, but I just "plant" them into the media a bit vertically (and next to the parent plant, so I will know which cultivar it is). I usually plant them during the spring and don't look at them until the end of the summer or even into the fall. Some cultivars, such as Akai Ryu, aren't easily propagated this way.

Hope that helps!

The few I have tried just sticking them standard vft media and they never took... just blacken out and died over a long period.

On the other hand I have tray of spag moss growing under lights with some VFT seedlings and so I took the flower stalk from my VFT "Crocodile" that had two branches, split it in tow, and a placed them in the spag partially submerged. They seems to take within a few weeks and not much blackened on the stems. Plus it was easy to see the small buds and roots forming at the bottom. More like the water technique i guess.

So now I am letting some of my more interesting varieties send up decent stalks and will just throw them in the spag again and let them go to town.

I am extremely new to this. I have propagated my VFT with flower stalk cuttings. I have 2 of 3 doing very well and then one who suddenly turned black at the top I will attach pictures for reference. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help this little guy out. I attached pictures of my set up along with the propagate in question and and the other 2 clippings that we don't the same day. Thank you!

It looks fine to me. Not all cuttings will strike. The will turn black, on the end as it reabsorbs nutrients to grow out roots.
