This may be a really noobish question but I would rather ask it here than
waste countless hours on finding a technique that does not exist ....so......

Essentially, is there a way to force a tree/bush to branch in a specific place?

You know, my family lives in the country and dealt with shaping things. . .what they did to shape a branch, for say, they tied a tough string around the core of the bush or tree and tied the other end to the branch they were trying to raise, shape, however. I hope this helps

If you want a branch to grow to the right or left, you have to tied the string around more than one other branche, so i mean, from my family history, it worked for them.

there are some techniques in bonzai culture for you to "training" some tree the way you want.

Do you want to make a new branch "born" from a specific place or do you want just to place the existing branches in the way you want? like bending them.

In the last case you could wire the tree with copper wire ( http://www.bonsaiforbeginners.com/bonsai-wiring.html )
