I never once changed the water nor disturbed them in any way.

The plastic wrap sealed everything in completely (no holes in the plastic wrap), so water loss was minimal at best and no water changes were needed.

Update 2/4/2013: 11 weeks after planting

The water-propagated flytraps are still going strong.

I suspect the Maroon Monster has been drinking my Red Bull.

I had to do a repot recently for a plant I was plant sitting and took two pullings. I'm going to give striking them in water a try.

I took two pullings from a plant a almost 2 weeks ago and am trying to do the water propagation, but the leaves are turning clear and black in the water. The very bottom of the pulling (white) is still white and it has started to gain some red color to it, water seems still to be clean, do you think I should cut off the dying part of the leaf? Its basically lost all color and probably function by now, do you think I still have a chance of a strike or does it sound like a double failure?

Amazing! for 2month sealed? No molding or algae? Very good results


EDIT: Sorry can I crash in a question for cephs. Can I use a cutting and seals in water to expect some strike the same way you did with VFT?

I'm not sure, I never tried.

is this a reliable way to propagate? what percent do you have strike?

cpZack, i have done this for DM and if u get a good pulling (meaning at least a part wich includes the base of the leaf at the rhizome, or even better, a piece of leave, with rhizome piece and roots) its about 90%.

I planted some water propagated leaf pullings last week, they even had tiny roots (looked like a hairy bush, hahahaha)

You can put the trimming right on top of the soil & it could possibly grow a new plant? Or is it more complicated then that?

You want to bury the part that was attached to the rhizome (about 1-2 cm deep), and let a part of the leaf and trap stick above ground, it will turn brown on the trap end and the leaf will also turn brown over time, but dont give up, plantlets will emerge

No, u can just treat as if the pot you planted them in had adult plants (although i dont know about freezing, i did this during spring)

Can you just use distilled water in a container for the VFT cutting to grow?
