Beginer question about seeds

by Tracker » Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:30 pm

Hello,
I just ordered 40 seeds pack listed at
http://www.flytrapcare.com/store/carniv ... -trap-seed
and I am excited about starting this project.
I remeber seeing flytraps offered in the old Johnson Smith catlouges.
Bought one a long time ago when I lived in the Phillipines, I am sure it went thru some
shipping hell. No info with it, it died pretty fast, or may have been dormant.

How many of the round ziplock containers pictured at
http://www.flytrapcare.com/growing-venu ... seeds.html
would I need for 40 seeds?

If it would take several could I use one larger container with same
spacing of holes?

So far I have these items, please let me know if any look wrong, as in
they might have nutrients, or something else that my cause the TDS to
be too high.

Image
These will be under florescent light or indirect sunlight.

I plan on washing the rocks in soap, good rinse in city water, and then
wash in distilled water. Then I will soak them in a bucket of distilled
water and check the TDS of the water after 12 hours? 24 hours ?
I do have a TDS meter.

Definatly need to order my perlite online, only miricle grow
type here.

I got my supplies after watching the video here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1A9_9hUCQo
After watching the video again, my rocks look much bigger
than the ones in the video :(

I would like a big tight cluster of traps like in this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjLJlwEl3_g

Will 40 seeds do this? how close together do I need to plant them
to get a dense cluster like that?

I have some Sunshine Mix #1, can it be used instead of the 50/50 peat/perlite ?

I may be tied to the bowl size in the picture, as this is a project I will be doing
with my father over at his home. How many seeds do you think it would take to
for the bowl in the picture?
Perhaps 40 seed would be enought for 2 projects? One in the bowl pictured and a
second in something else with more depth for roots as is suggested in the beginers guide
on this site.
Thanks for taking time to read this, and thank you to all involved in keeping
this site and forum up.

Main thing is dont use the bowl, you will be much better off using a pot with drainage holes and a tray under it.

You could probably start them all in one of those containers. The seeds are only 1mm and the plants will be exceptionally small for quite some time. If you didn't want to repot them for a while, you could use two of those plastic containers.

Sure. And you don't really need the lid with holes but keeping the humidity high will speed up germination. Without the lid, depending on the ambient temperature of the room, it may only take a few days longer to see germination.

The problem is that 12 to 24 hours isn't long enough. The rocks will very slowly leech minerals into the medium over the course of months, not hours. In most cases if the rocks aren't some sort of soft stone (such as limestone), it may not matter.

One seed will do that, given enough time :)

But the pot of flytraps in that video is over 10 years old. Be aware that growing flytraps from seed is a slow and challenging process. It takes at least a couple of years to get a full sized plant, usually longer. 40 seeds will pack a pot quite full, given enough time and good care, but it will take years for that to happen.

I don't know what Sunshite Mix #1 is. Can you list the ingredients?

I would suggest a different bowl. It doesn't have any drainage and clear glass bowls don't make good choices because, when placed in direct sunlight, they let light in through the sides that can heat the growing medium up quickly. Keeping the soil temperature relatively stable is important. For that reason, it's best to use insulated foam containers or lighter colored plastic containers with good drainage.

Good luck!
