Hey yall!

I found this plant while exploring my local park today - I live in Northern California.

It looks remarkably like a Venus Fly Trap to me! I am researching to identify it, and this is one of my first stops... Any ideas? It is located next to a small stream, in a very marshy/wet area.

Nope, that's not a venus flytrap but it certainly looks interesting!

Not a flytrap but it does catch the eye! Perhaps they are spent seed pods from another plant?

I found some similar lichen pics, just to prove my point.

The color, growth habit, and location all point to lichen in my opinion.

I agree, it could easily be growing on a branch which had fallen to the floor.

No offense taken. Probably just due to differences in what we experience around us. Where I live I see both types, the flat crust forming type and the more shapely variety.

Fun fact since I can tell everyone is in to this.

Lichen are actually a composite organism. They're a fungus in a symbiotic relationship with either algae or cyanobacteria. And in some cases the shape of the lichen can differ depending on whether the same fungus is inhabited by the algae or the cyanobacteria.
