This is my best FTS seedling, started 4/13/12: [img]<a%20href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lynn-n-ste ... ="002"></a>[/img] .....................so I copy and paste the HTML from this photo off of Flickr, inside the IMG brackets, and this is all I get. I don't know why photo sharing must remain such a frustrating mystery to me alone, apparently. I was able to add photos successfully on another thread, but only because you have extra options to attach a photo when you start a new post. For some reason, you only have the IMG option above the comment box to add a photo when you're replying to a thread. It never works for me. Try as they might to walk me through the process, no one has been able help me solve this great mystery. So, I'll attempt to show the photo on a new thread, I guess.

The URL copied and pasted into that post is complex and includes html markup and URL character escaping and two separate HTML tags, an anchor (link) tag and an image tag. Instead, what should appear is just the direct URL (web address) of the image itself, surrounded by the Forum img tags on either side.

Here's the original text copied (presumably) from image-sharing code at Flickr (won't work)--
Code: Select all
<a%20href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lynn-n-steve/7684168668/"%20title="002%20by%20lnstv8,%20on%20Flickr"><img%20src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8021/7684168668_02384cf52b_z.jpg"%20width="640"%20height="480"%20alt="002"></a>
And here is the actual image location URL, embedded within that complex bit of code above--
Code: Select all
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8021/7684168668_02384cf52b_z.jpg
That direct image URL above, the actual location of the image itself, is what should be copied into a Forum post, and then surrounded by the Forum's img tag, like this:
Code: Select all
[img]http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8021/7684168668_02384cf52b_z.jpg[/img]
When one surrounds an image URL with the beginning and ending img tag, it then appears in the post like this--

But Steve, with all due respect, this is not common knowledge among "common" folk like me. After reading all of that, I still couldn't tell you how to do it. There's nowhere to just pull that URL out of, without a high degree of computer knowledge. I tried twelve different ways to simply send an image to the comment box, and each attempt left me more frustrated. Thanks for trying, though. <Insert disoriented emoticon here>.

Hey that FTS seedling kind of looks like the one I got from the mystery box. But yours is more cluster growth. Pretty cool

To be honest I find Flickr a pain in the bottom when it comes to using it to share photos. I personally prefer Photobucket, when photos are uploaded there they have various different link types you can use. If you simply copy and paste the "Forum" link into your reply it'll add the IMG tags for you and make life a lot quicker. As for attaching an image to a response you have to go into advanced reply by clicking the "Post Reply" button above the box you look to type in then scroll down, it'll allow you to attach an image.

The box at the bottom of each topic is known as the quick reply box, it has basic functions and is simply to make responding to topics much quicker. When pressing the "Post Reply" button you'll open up a new window very similar to the one used when creating a new topic, this is the advanced reply mode and has all the functionality you get when creating a new topic.

Still loving this topic! I wanted to contribute but I unfortunately don't have a camera anymore (mine bit the dust)... I had an attempt at taking some photos of my seedlings using my webcam though, they aren't too bad, at least you can see the traps. Hehe. These aren't the only seedlings I have but they were the easiest to photograph and the best looking.

I'm sorry, I can't avoid a short rant. Please don't take offense, sbrooks, this is not about you. I understand your confusion. Common folks (who want to use the internet), need to spend about 30 minutes learning the basics of HTML. It's been around for decades now and isn't going anywhere. Yes, HTML has some symbols and abbreviations that aren't found in every day english, but omg, wtf, <]:) so do txt msgs <3 lol. It's not scary, just different. If something has to do with computers, so many people take on a helpless attitude. They want to use them, but don't want to learn how. There would be no common knowledge if everyone refused to learn anything. It's time to add common internet syntax to the common knowledge dictionary. It's either that or people can just keep guessing and being frustrated. There. I'm sure that will change the world for the better.

But ya, just hit the Post Reply button instead of using quick reply. Took me a while to find that too. The traps pictured remind me of a small Big Mouth I had.

I have tried to learn HTML, and apparently I am far too "common". In the past, I have searched for info on the internet on learning HTML, went through the process of trying it the way it was explained, still came up empty. Just bringing a line of text down one line will apparently remain a mystery to me forever. Code is intimidating to most people. I know the computer geeks look down on people such as me, but at least I'm trying; My dad once touched a computer about 10 years ago; he right-clicked when he should have left-clicked, got a "what's this?" message, said "that's it!", and still refuses to give it another try. He'll never know the joy of spending days trying to figure out how to clear all facets of a program off of your PC so that it can accept a competitor's program, or how to change a computer's default email address, or how to get all your music on one computer to transfer to another-----I know, I know, it's easy to do, just go to yada, yada, yada.................

Anyway, back to VFT seedlings, I've went nuts with them lately. My first seeds I got from the Fly Trap Store, about 4 months ago, and although almost all of them germinated, I think that I put them out in the sun a little too soon. Seems like I read on one of these threads that someone had trouble growing seedlings exclusively under lights, so I got the idea in my head that I would give them a few hours of morning sun every day. That often extended 'til 11 or 12, which I believe has greatly stunted many of those poor seedlings. Out of 45 seeds rec'd, I believe 38 germinated, of which about 25 are still alive, and I would consider only about 10 of them healthy enough to be feeding. Live and learn. I have since bought about 250 more seeds, many of which are supposed to be of the biggest varieties, as well as special cultivars. I am aware that seedlings will be different from the parent, although I'm not sure if you pollinate an Akai Ryu x Akai Ryu, is the offspring officially considered Akai Ryu? Or is there some genetic (oh, what's the word?) "reversion"? Anyway, my point is my seedlings are springing up like (insert folksy simile here). Hopefully, I've learned from the first batch, and am ready to raise some meat-eaters. 8-)

Good luck on the seedlings!

The only way you can ever get an official Akai Ryu from itself is from vegetative division or tissue culture with tissue from the Akai Ryu which both create a clone of the plant. Seeds that were pollinated from two Akai Ryu's would be labeled as Akai Ryu x Akai Ryu, and although they may show some similar characteristics with their mother plants they will never be the same as the official Akai Ryu :)

Thanks for the answer. I take it, then, that all official cultivars out there have to have been clones of one particular plant that basically is the sole mother of every single official plant of that cultivar? (That probably doesn't make sense to anyone but me, but hopefully that question can be deciphered in the way I intended.........) :geek:

That's correct for all official cultivars except 'Red Burgundy' which states that it can be propagated by seed and I know of at least one person that has tissue cultured 'Red Burgundy' x 'Red Burgundy' and sold the resulting seedlings as 'Red Burgundy.'

But if you buy your plants from a reputable source and the plant comes with a name, that plant is an exact clone of a single plant that was, at one point, selected and named.

OMG !!!
LOVE all the seeds grown photos.
Thanks for sharing everyone.
Too bad there wasn't a warning posted at the start of the thread about how amazing the seedlings would be.
Now I want to try growing from seed ............
...... in fact there I just saw there was some seed in stock so I just bought some ( along with a couple more plants )
Ugghh !!!
It's official ..... I have a serious VFT problem
Is there an addiction forum where we can go for help ?
..... or is it too late for me ?
