My visit to Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden

by Matt » Thu Oct 02, 2014 5:58 pm

During my trip to Wilimington and Croatan National Forest, I took the opportunity to visit Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden. In fact, I was very graciously given a place to stay with Dan Sheret, Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden caretaker, and his wife, Mary Ames. I cannot thank them enough for opening their house to me and allowing me to use their residence as my home base during my stay in the area.

Below are a few photos I took of the garden that I wanted to share. Hope you enjoy!

Also, don't miss the thread on the Rehder Giant Flytraps that I was lucky enough to harvest from the garden, with permission of Dan Sheret, for preservation and propagation in cultivation.

Loads of Sarracenia - flytraps and sundews are in there too, but they're very small and hard to see from this distance

And I found this especially cool! This is one of the flytraps we sent Dan in 2013 to plant in the garden (Dan pointed out many, many of the flytraps we'd sent him over the last couple of years to help repopulate the garden after it was poached). The flytrap in the below photo is actually an FTS Crimson Sawtooth, which is a plant I started from seed in sterile tissue culture way back in March 2009. It's incredible to see a flytrap I created in such unnatural conditions as tissue culture, growing in a wild setting in its natural habitat.

Beautiful! Nothing is more pretty than seeing carnivorous plants in their natural habitat.

Nice history Matt - looking forward to knowing more. I will regularly take pics of the garden. I'm going back when it's raining with my camera. The recent ones I posted were at sunrise 6:30-7:00 I'm such a geek, I rock myself to sleep looking at a slideshow of this garden lol

We are going to visit other land preserves and see (take pics and video) these beautiful plants in their natural environment.

I was thinking, not just poaching and building on wetlands harms these plants but also fertilizers we use on our lawns.

I'd love to start a Carnivorous garden in my community. It is actually a realistic option. lol

So Matt I added a few pics from the angles where you took your pics so you can see progress. Hey, I'm not looking for glory or praise here. I'm just sharing pics of someone else's amazing work. ;)

So after reading a few more posts: Also from Stanley Rehder Gardens: I took some in the rain with a poor quality camera, sorry.
