My (sphagnum) moss cultures

As you all may know, once you get bit by the carnivorous plant bug, there's no saving ya. From there, I became pretty fascinated with sphagnum and got some in October.

Grown outdoors, stacked on each other in pretty good lighting, nothing too intense. Clear cover with no drainage, aired out every few days. Used to be good at misting daily when I first got them, now that it's winter I'm not as attentive. Though during the few rains we've had this winter, I let them get a good drink. Just rained last week and poked a hole to allow draining, didn't help much. Don't think it's too necessary tho since I'm pretty on it when I let these guys enjoy the rain.

Love the way they've colored up. Culture uniformity got ruined during the first rain I left them open too long, so it got flooded and shifted once drained.

Another, smaller culture, I assumed a green species, but it has a slight brown tinge. Still a fan. Growth structure is different from these big ones. More thin, but may be due to conditions. Just plopped in a plastic container, some water at the bottom and inside an open ziplock, also outside.

Here we got some random moss that came with my Sarracenia from Home Depot. When I repot them, I removed as much as I could and decided to culture what I had. Couldn't find a good image of how it was initially, but here's the result! I really like this little pot.

Coming back to life! Another random moss culture, they were in another pot that fell over so I threw what I could save into this. They're all peaking their little heads out. I was afraid that one in the back wasn't going to make it. Homie pulled through and been pushing out new growth these past couple weeks.

Anyway, I have 4 other sphagnum cultures going not pictured. One is a small plastic ramekin that I threw remaining sphag heads and stems in, they're creeping up. The other 3 came with my main cultures, I just never got around to getting them going. Began this past week tho. Will probably fix up the main cultures I have going a bit since I like how they were set up before the rain incident.

Fin. :)

I like the red. they are looking good.

I understand the moss will grow in just water without soil.
