The weather's been warming up and the traps are waking up early. Time to repot.

Very nice!

No sign of flower stalks yet. LG was the first of my VFT's to wake up (which is usually the case) and has recently slowed down with the recent cold spell. Again, my LG loves the cold and lower light conditions. Seems to enjoy the dampness more than the my other traps too. Hoping everyone has been safe and doing well.

LG has been appreciating all the extra rain and cooler nights we've been having. Should be interesting to see if it's as good of a seed producer as its reputation leads it to be.

LG isn't putting out as many flowers as my other traps, but they sure are beautiful. Hopefully it will make up for it in seed count.

I don't know why, but this has been the best season for LG so far. This would be the first season my LG actually looks like an LG should for me. I know Low Giant is a great cultivar from what I've seen from everyone else, but it's always been kind of a dud for me personally (except in the cool, Fall weather.) As usual, its traps are massive and colorful in Autumn. The seeds were successfully harvested and have been germinating for 3 weeks now.

That's really surprising for me to hear about Low Giant not performing well for you. I've grown it for 12 years now and absolutely love it. It is consistently one of the best-looking flytraps in my collection, quite robust (rarely gets sick), quite large, colors up great, and is a heavy seed producer.

Thanks Matt! Yes, you're definitely right about it being a good seed producer. It had the largest flower clusters of my VFT's and its pods were packed with seed. Yeah, I really don't get why it looks so rough throughout the year, except in Fall for me. Like all of my VFT's look the part in Autumn, but they're also robust in spring and summer. For some reason LG has always been slow to start out in Spring and hates the summer heat here.

Out of curiosity, how do it's offspring turn out for you? Do most look just like LG or is there variety in the mix? If I remember right, I think I may have seen you mention FTS Purple Ambush was parented by LG. I know Wally came from Big mouth...

That's really odd. They look good for us pretty much all year. In fact, Low Giant is one of the few that looks good even in winter, as it will keep many of its traps through the cold winter months.

I never really kept track of parentage for most of the plants I've started from seed, so any listed parent is really just a guess based on its physical traits. I would almost certainly guess that FTS Purple Ambush is a seedling of Low Giant. Low Giant could have been crossed with another colorful low grower like Fine Tooth x Red, which also is a great seeder, to produce FTS Purple Ambush. One or both of those two plants would be my guess as to the parents.

Ready for a repot

So, let me ask you. How do you repot a rhizome that has torpedoed like that? It looks like it is growing down instead of out.

A few have found new homes, but the LG mother pot still looks great!

They tend to grow down, not out so pots that have depth are preferred over width (for a single plant.) I like to wet the moss first, then fill the pot. I then make a large hole in the moss and guide the roots down with my fingers before gently pushing the moss inwards towards the rhizome to finish.
