Large part of the plant is black but the rhizome is fine?

So this purple ambush has a amazing rhizome, at least a inch across, and while there is no rot from when I planted it, there is this big black patch that's making me worry. That's my big concern.

These are my first really committed purchases into the VFT rabbit hole, and I want to make sure they live happy and well. Here in N Texas the highs are 100 and the lows are around 75. Bright full sun and about 50% humidity. Can I just let the boys be and they'll be just fine? I try to let their roots stay wet and the top just be slightly moist. What are your thoughts?

That black patch is made up of old, dead leaves. You can carefully trim them with scissors if you want, but they won't hurt your plant. It looks like there's a new crown forming to the left of the dead leaves, so try not to damage it.

Here in eastern North Carolina, we were getting highs in the mid-90's and lows in low-70's for the past two weeks, with humidity so high you could practically grab a handful of air and squeeze the water out of it. Try to keep your plants out of the late-afternoon sun (sunshine from dawn until 2 or 3 PM would be great), keep them damp, and they should be fine.

Check out the weather forecast for Wilmington, North Carolina if you want to see what the wild flytraps are experiencing.
