Is he dead?

hey fellas
Im new to this and havent had my venus flytrap for very long (Id say about 3-4 months), im not quite sure if hes dead or not. When i first bought him it didnt close and was very green. Ive been keeping him next to a sunny window and only watering him with distilled water. About 4 weeks ago it started to go black. Of course it only just became autumn so this is probably way too early for it to be dormant(this is me going off what ive read).
the leaves are turning black and then falling off - i honestly believe he's dying but im clinging on the the fact that it may be dormant.
(i live in Australia by the way so is a little confusing looking at pages about dormancy as they talk bout america a lot)

Well it does not look good. Un-pot it and look at the bulb. If it's WHITE and firm it's got a chance of coming back. What kind of soil is it in?

It looks like it may have gotten dehydrated. It's not dormant, but it looks like it was still alive in the photo.

dig it up. check the rhizome. from here, it looks blackened in the middle. probably no rhizome, and thus plant, left. i'm sorry.

This VFT is dead. It has no new traps.

VFTs can live up to 2 months without eating bugs, spiders, and frogs.

a VFT not having any new traps does not mean it is dead.

Vft's can live forever without ever catching a single bug.
