Hey everyone,

How often do Nepenthes make basals?

Depends on species or hybrid.
My ventricosa has only ever basaled once. My 'Lady Luck'? Maybe 4 times or more, I haven't bothered to count. They're still coming up. I've had those two for around the same amount of time and they began around the same size. If anything, the 'Lady Luck' was smaller (at least at the time of basal formation) because it grew slower. I also have a hybrid that's basaling while still a rosette plant. But then there are some that rarely ever make basals, too, or so I hear. I haven't coaxed a basal out of my tobaica yet and it's vining.

So, yeah. Depends on plant. Any specific one you're wondering about?

Thanks! I was mainly curious about ventricosa but you've already answered that!

Ah, yeah. My ventricosa only basaled when it was nearing the vining stage. It was making intermediate pitchers that were transitioning to uppers. It also tipped over and began growing sideways due to not having something to climb, and I think that's what triggered the basal growth.

I have a N. [(lowii × veitchii) × boschiana] × ventricosa "red" that has about a 5in leaf span and already has 4.
