Can highland nepenthes and heliamphora be kept at around 55 F constantly or do they need the actual temperature drop to grow. Any help is appreciated.

I'm no expert here, but I am certain that they need a rise in temperatures up to at least 75 degrees.

Yeah, makes sense. Thanks for the input!

Yes, highland nepenthes need temperature drop for their metabolism to have "rest". Day 70-80 °F and night 50-60 °F. If we are talking about ultra highland nepenthes like macrophylla, edwardsiana,... they need around 65°F during day and 45°F during night.

Around 55 constantly? That may be a bit low for even helis and HL/UHL neps. Even extremely picky species such as N. villosa appreciate daytime temp rises to 65 with nighttime temps of 55. Most helis would probably like a tad warmer days as well, although H. elongata may not mind as much.

N. villosa likes temps to hit 78 degrees during the day dropping to 55 or lower at night. 65 is much too cold for healthy growth. And villosa loves light so don’t light starve it or any other neps. You might consider that it’s actually not the temps that matter but the difference in degrees between night and day.

Nep0260 are you sure about elongata? FYI you don’t have the real species only the AW “hybrid” which many suspect as actually just pulchella so just wondering how your making that judgement

Yes, my elongata is the true species. On top of the tepui it grows (Ilu Tepui) it regularly encounters freezes. Species such as H. ionasi that grow nearby can't handle such cold temps so don't exist on the summit of Ilu.

Elongata is notorious for taking ages (20+ years) to make its first immature pitcher. However, I do know somebody who has succeeded in getting the AW elongata to make matures and it is not pulchella :D. I've communicated with other growers who also say that H. elongata appreciates much colder temps in cultivation as well as in situ.

Dude AW hasn’t ever distributed pure elongata. Perhaps you’ve been misled by others who can’t tell the difference

Either that’s a typo, or the elongata produces only adult pitchers for extended periods of time (that a negative?), or whoever you heard that from is growing a dead elongata

Yes, the purity of AWs elongata is a controversial subject. I personally believe that he does distribute pure H. elongata, however the clone is not very good. I've talked with somebody who works for Andreas and is one of the few people to have grown the AW H. elongata to make mature pitchers, who believes the clone is pure. I know another person who works for AW who is not entirely sure about elongata but does not outlaw the possibility of it being true, just that it's not a great clone. To add to the confusion, AW has sold two elongata clones over the years, one which is not very good and the other one which is much better.

And surprisingly it's not a typo! I actually know a number of people who can say that 15-20 years is a perfectly accurate estimate of time for elongata to make mature pitchers. Mine has been making immatures for 2.5 years or so and I'm not holding my breath . I have a 15 year old H. ionasi that took 10 years to make its first mature pitcher from AW. Ionasi and elongata both are kind of notorious in the heli community for taking ages to make their first mature pitchers.

I highly doubt that, he has a big greenhouse and I don’t think many 14 year olds are able to convince their parents to buy them a greenhouse for a plant obsession that the parents probably hate.
