Yesterday I got an account on Terraforums, and was looking through some of the setups for growing VFT's and other carnivores. I then came across someone who conducted an extensive experiment of growing VFT's with hydroponics. I'm not sure if this has already been discussed here, and I'm late to the party- but here's the post:

Interesting. I have thought about trying to grow VFT's in a synthetic media like a shredded sponge or something of that nature but I would probably have to add a chemical to replicate the missing acid of the peat like the author did.
