Well the sarra flower is pollinated I suspect but the swelling that the now repositioning of the flower to the vertical position as seen in these Pic's I am putting up now .

oooh purty.i know what im gonna do when i get a sarra with flowers on it

Update. Today I pick up my harvest of Sarra psittacina. Obviously I have success with polination. Soon I will collect also the following plants: Sarra leucophylla and Sarra Flava var maxima, I hope because their stalks are still green.

Great job there my friend good pic's too, to show the seed pod contents , just a quick extension on what Dimitar has put up , for viable seed, that's is fertile seed, your seed pod's must be dry and all most ready to open naturally ok , its a timing thing ,when the pods are ripe in the wild the pod starts to crack open on the pods seams, then you know its ready to harvest, ok not before or your germination of the seed will be very low , so be vigilant

how i missed it here i'll never know

what is the best way to store pollen for a few weeks while i wait for another flower to open, if i want to cross?
can i collect some on a cotton bud, put the c/bud in a bag in the fridge or something? then bring it out when needed?

yep put it on some paper ,not white , small square ! put a amount on the paper then fold the paper up so the pollen dont fall out , then pit it in a small plastic bag money zip lock or smaller one and place in the fridge .some all so use tinfoil or ally foil too to hold the pollen either is ok you can store the pollen for several months

thanks john, the straps/petals have finally fallen completely today on both them, i see a tiny bit of pollen in one but ill wait till theres a decent amount to collect

i'd like to collect pollen and at the same time self pollinate that flower, and store the excess of what i collect so later ill use it and cross with the next round of flowers to open in a few weeks.

Glenn is the petals have fallen off its to late mate , you need to pollinate before they fall , as soon as the flower is open the should be ready to pollinate only 3 to 6 days after depending on the temp and sun for pollen ripening , so you may have missed the boat if the cover petals have fallen there will be no more pollen production in that flower ok

sorry john, what i mean is the flower is fully open and the petals are hanging down completely now (dropped)

i'd just like to add a bit of advice onto johns "easy sarra pollination" info if i may be so bold..

on the weekend john showed me various things, and also pollinated his sarra's while i was there.

while i was doing fine with the advice he gave in the OP, one thing i noticed and tried about 5min ago which made a HUGE difference was that he didnt use his paintbrush to collect/wipe up pollen,he uses the paint brush like a broom to sweep pollen from the centre out to the stigma. (or at least that was my observation )


i was using a cotton bud (qtip) and lightly spin/wipe it around to collect pollen, then i'd move out to the stigma and give it a light rub with the c/bud, but this sweeping seems to be more efficient

im just hoping pollen rubs off.. .but john virtually bathe's it in a dusty pollen cloud

And my other Sarra Leucophylla is almost ready as you can see the pictures below. The stem is still green, but the seeds are beginning to be seen. Ovary splits gradually and I tied it around slightly and fine netting. This will hopefully prevent the loss of seeds when the ovary burst and pushed the seeds everywhere. I don't use nylon to tie the ovary, as advise others. The reason is that if you use nylon, it will form a stagnant air around the seed. From the high humidity that will get the seeds are likely to be moldy or rotten. This is the last thing anyone wants to happen.Now, stem, ovary need lots of fresh air to allow the seed to ripen well. In my country is already mid-autumn night temperatures fall to minus 2 degrees, but during the day they rose to 15C with good sunshine. This helps the seeds to ripen completely. I hope that soon I will show you and them.
