I have 3 young Drosera regia plants available for sale. These plants were started from root cuttings taken about a year ago. They grow in a standard 50/50 peat/perlite mixture and are voracious feeders. The leaves have reached 4” to 5” in length.

Regia can be a notoriously fickle plant for many growers. It does prefer cooler temperatures, and a cool period at night is required when daytime temps start to get really warm. Mine grow on a southeastern exposure window sill. When temps start to reach the mid-90s, my plants lose most of their dew, and that is when I know it is time to place them inside a refrigerator in the evening before bringing them outside again in the morning. (We have almost reached the refrigerator point here in Las Vegas. )

I may have a different clone, as it was unlabelled, but I bought mine from a guy who grew his outdoors in Gulfport, MS. I grow mine in the garage under lights where day temps can get over 90+ degrees and night temps over 75+ regularly. It went from a small 3-4" plant to two huge plants. I have pictures on my instagram if you're interested. My point being, you never know. Regia is one of my easier plants.

I honesty did not know what to expect when I purchased my regia. Window sill culture was in its future, and I wasn’t expecting the plant to do well, especially in hot, dry Las Vegas. But I was captivated by the plant. I had to give it a try.

My first regia was a 3-4” plant as well, and it surprised me by quickly sending up leaf after leaf and eating like a monster. The regia grew in an uncooled room on a sunny window sill where temps could reach over 110F in the afternoon, and the summer heat did prevent the plant from dewing up well. It started to stall when overnight lows rose into the 80s (no way was it going to put up with Las Vegas’ 90+ overnight lows during the height of summer), and that was when I began sending it into a fridge for a good night’s sleep. The regia doesn’t seem particularly happy during my hot summers, but it tolerates them and is a glorious plant dripping in dew during the remainder of the year.

Aside from its fridge residency during the summer, the regia has surprisingly proven to be a bone hardy, undemanding plant for me. My original young plant has multiplied into several, and it is mesmerizing to see those 12-15” tentacles tightly coiled around prey! If my overnight lows didn’t wander over the mid-80s for extended periods of time, the regia would do quite well just sitting on its window sill.

Long story short, like Drummer230 says, you just never know until you try. Growing regia on a sunny window sill in Las Vegas is not a wise choice by most standards. But for me, the plant has thrived, and I am so glad I tried!

By window sill you mean inside, right?

Hearing this, I'm definitely encouraged to give them a try, maybe sooner rather than later. Concerning the nightly drop though, how cool do they want it? I grow most of my tropical dews in my room under artificial lighting, and the temperature routinely rises to around 85-90f (under the lights) and doesn't often drop below 78-75 at night. During the winter is a different story of course.

Yes, this is an indoor plant for me during the summer. However, the room in which it is kept is not cooled during the summer (it's an extra bedroom upstairs). It gets HOT in there in the middle of summer... over 100F.

I have tried leaving the regia in 100% moderate shade in my backyard during summer before the 110s set in, and the plant does fine for me if provided an overnight cooling period. However, dew production does take a hit.

I don't grow under lights, so I am not your best resource in this area. I would also check with other successful Florida growers in your area to see what worked best for them.

That being said...

Based on my experience, regia can handle temps up to at least the low 100s, so the 85-90 under lights shouldn't be an issue. My plants do not require any overnight chilling until the lows start staying in the mid-80s. It seems that the higher the daytime temps get, the more substantial a cooling period the regia wants. With your lows in the mid-to-high-70s, you might not have to provide them with a cooling period at all.
