I used to let the moss grow in mine, and it didn't seem to be hurting the plants, but then birds started digging them up, I guess looking for insects. So now I put white rocks on top of the soil, leaving enough space for the VFT clumps to spread a little, and that seems to discourage the birds. If moss grows between the rocks, I still let it grow, though. I'd be surprised if it does any harm to established plants, but I can see that it might compete with seedlings for space.
