Hey all,

This is something I've always wondered about in regards to pitcher plant hybrids. I've read that pure sarracenia purpureas need outside forces to help them digest prey they catch, like bacteria and bug larvae, but I was wondering if hybrids would also require outside help as well?

I've got what apparently is a sarracenia Barba Green (from a death cube, I emailed the company and they told me its probably a Barba Green), an unidentified sarracenia purpurea hybrid (from a death cube from the same company, no idea what hybrid it is), and a classic Judith Hindle (from petflytrap). Will they digest their own food with their own enyzmes?

From what I’ve heard, Older traps from purps that are a year or two old start needing outside help. However newly grown traps produce their own digestive enzymes. I was reading something about how purps from Canada were feeding on baby newts and the sun would boil them while they were trapped. So I guess the sun helps as well.
