I would guess sine California has more stringent Live Plant/animal import regulations. jcal's plants are all top notch though

Shipping rates to California are a lot higher.

Shipping rates are based on distance. Shipping to CA from NY would be no more expensive than to OR. There is no CA surcharge.

Agreed. I bought 5 plants from jcal in December. Rare, great condition, and reasonable prices.

Not true. USPS charges differently based on zone. I ship all the time. Cali boxes are 1/3 more to ship.

Zone rates=distance and CA is not a "zone".

Enter you zip code here and see just how many states along with CA are in the same zone rate for you.

I ran into the same thing when shipping USPS to California.. for some reason it was much more expensive. I shipped to Oregon which is same or further and it wasn't more expensive.. I asked the postal clerk and they also told me shipping to California is just more $$$.

I only ship potted which means med box at 13.50
Supplies and the fee from PayPal would make me bump it back up to around $15

I have thought about this before. I try to price things as far as possible ladies and gents.

This thread flew way out of hand...

I've worked back east in several states and shipped to the West Coast all of the time. I never ran into that but clearly I'm wrong with my blanket statement and that's not the case for all locations.

That's why I tell people to pay gift to friends and family to avoid fees.
