Alien Venus fly trap - Ridiculous!

by Matt » Tue Sep 17, 2013 11:20 pm

In another thread people were asking for photos of my mother Alien flytrap after I mentioned how insane it looks right now. This is the largest Alien flytrap I've ever seen. The largest traps are 1.75" or so and look like Vienna sausage hot dog buns :) I get a good chuckle every time I look at this plant  I hope you do too!

I just took a look at my growlist and it appears that I got my first Alien in September 2010, so that means I've been growing that plant for 3 years. It was very small when I received it and was still fairly small this spring. But once I put it in the New Zealand long fibered sphagnum this spring, it really took off!

Thanks everyone for the comments :)

Wow Matt, that's a great looking plant!! Do these still have the three triggers on each side? Or do they grow more to compensate for the size?

They usually have a few more than 3 large trigger hairs on each lobe and then tons of very small ones sprinkled along the mid-rib of the trap. I do not know if the smaller ones are active or not. Here is a photo from the store for reference:
