How often should I repot my Venus Fly Trap? PDF Print E-mail

Venus Fly Traps respond well to being repotted once a year. The media can get old and compacted making it hard for the roots of the plant to grow. Repotting will assure that the media stays fresh and aerated.

The best time to repot your Venus Fly Trap is in the early spring time just as it is coming out of dormancy. The only time to actively avoid repotting a plant is when it is flowering. However, Venus Fly Traps don't seem to mind being uprooted at any time during the year and usually resume growth within a few days of being repotted.

If you just got a plant from the store, I would recommend repotting it as soon as possible. Usually plants in stores aren't cared for properly and are watered with impure water. These impurities will stay in the media. They might be able to be flushed out with a heavy watering, but it is just easier to mix new media and repot.

Stop feeding your trap worms. They have a different protine and chemical makeup than insects and will basically poison your plant (same reason you dont feed it hamburger). Only feed your trap insects that are small enough to COMPLEATLY fit in the mouths. tiny/smll feeder crickets are cheep and can ne gotten at almost any pet store. check out www.CarnivorousPlantNursery.com for more excelent info on fly traps and other bug eaters. mouths turn black and die on a regular basis when they get too "tired" and new leaves will form. make sure the water you use is as mineral and neutrient free as possible too. check the website. they have a wealth of info. hope this helpes

and no slugs either. fruit flys, flys you catch in your home, ifits not an INSECT dont feed it to your traps. and you dont have to feed all the mouths that are open. only maybe 1/2 at a time max. good luck

My venus fly trap looks lke its dying.
The soil round it keeps geting moss on it.
The plant it self did have flowers on and then they died.
The plant also only has 4 traps on it and they are closed all the time.
Can you suggest anything to help it get back to life?

I just got some of those little monsters as a gift. smilies/smiley.gif
I really loved them and want them to be as healthy as possible.
I'm planning to repot them and place them in a big and comfortable pot. smilies/smiley.gif But I don't know if I can find ant sphagnum moss.. :/ If I can't, I don't know if not consisting that in the soil would affect its growth.
Ohh?..
