What sounds like a better option for dormancy, the garage or the basement? PDF Print E-mail

I would say that the garage is probably your best bet provided that it has a window that will allow light in. Most garages are unheated, but seldom get below freezing. If your basement has a window, and it is also unheated, this would be a fine option as well. As you can see it depends on which place gets the right amount of light and has the right temperature.

Choose the option that provides the most sunlight with the temperature in the 32 to 55 degree Fahrenheit range.

My VFTS go into the fridge for winter. I have no basement or garage. The attic is too cold. The fridge is PERFECT. 40 degrees F. They don't require light when dormant.

Have FUN!

I leave My VFT s put side unless you have temps below 0 f they are very hardy. If your in doubt mulch with pine straw or use one to experiment with. The Frige is a good option too.
I live in zone seven but I do know people in Zone 5 that keep their VTF outdoors and mulched in winter.

hello, there i have a shed where i keep my birds there, and during the winter, it gets about 40-50 degrees in there. The birds survive really well. it has two medium sized windows, so when i get my VTFs (inside plastic pot with hard plastic cover)will it survive???
