How big will my Venus Flytrap grow? PDF Print E-mail

The entire plant when fully grown will be about 4 or 5 inches in diameter. Each leaf will be between 1 and 3 inches long. The largest traps will be a maximum size of about 2 inches. So, unfortunately, you won't be able to feed your little brother to your Venus fly trap even when it is fully grown.

My grandson has a Venus Flytrap its perfectly haelthy and happy. It does however have a very long shoot growing up out of the middle of it. Is this normal, should we leave it alone or remove it. It does appear to have tiny hairs on it.

If it's long and it's taller than the traps, it should be a flower stalk. I'm not sure about the hair part though.

If it's a single stalk that doesn't resemble any other part of the plant it's flowering. It might be worth cutting it off as flowering usually makes the plant fairly innactive for between one and two years. If you want to see it flower though there is no harm in leaving it to it's own devices

I have done a little research and even though I agree the venus fly traps won't grow to a length in which it could eat people, but yeah (how about some rats?)...that would be sweet! Maybe being a bit optimistic, but if you should give the plant alternative light source(a combination of pure white and red globes), and keep the peat sufficiently moist. The ticky part is to replant the fly traps into larger pots or terrariums. But so be it... Could you not quite possible make them grow bigger then 12,7 cm? Or is the idea a little bit far fetched?

The alternative light source can also be used with a timer to make life easier and to insure you don't fry the fragile little "flower".
