Publication: Growing Carnivorous Plants by Barry Rice. Page 81
Registration Date: December 6, 2006
Breeder: Cresco Nursery, The Netherlands, 1996
Nominant: Barry Rice
Registrant: Barry Rice, Davis, CA USA, October 20, 1999
Description:
Quoted from Growing Carnivorous Plants by Barry Rice: "This new cultivar name is for a plant that was originally noticed by Mike Ross during a trip to Cresco Nursery in The Netherlands in 1996. The trap tissue never completely develops, so the leaf lobes have a jagged, incomplete structure. The name 'Wacky Traps' is one that has developed over time by grower consensus. This plant never performs well and is dislike by some growers, while others delight in its strangeness."
Propagation: Vegetative reproduction. Sexual reproduction might not even be possible.
Etymology: After the weird shaped traps
Background: Dionaea muscipula 'Wacky Traps' is truly a genetic freak. Cresco nursery propagates thousands of Venus Fly Traps from tissue culture, and Dionaea 'Wacky Traps' was discovered in a tray of a bunch of mutants by Mike Ross. Dionaea 'Wacky Traps' has also been called "Bart Simpson," coined by Ed Read, because of the resemblance of the plant to Bart's hair. The plant is an extremely slow grower. It has abnormally thick traps and petioles, which are probably the reason why 'Wacky Traps' has trouble closing its traps quickly. It takes several minutes for a trap to close even with repeated teasing of the trigger hairs.
Robert Ziemer has tried unsuccessfully to sexually propagate Dionaea 'Wacky Traps'. His best guess as to why is that it appears that the stigma of the 'Wacky Traps' flower is deformed and therefore not receptive to pollen. He also states that the pollen appears to be normal, so in 2008 he is going to try pollinating a different Dionaea clone to see if he can get seed.
