Web Publication: http://www.carnivorousplants.org/cpn/Species/v33n3p83_89.html

Registration Date: July 29, 2003

Breeder: Staff at Agri-Starts III, Inc, Eustis, Fla., USA, 1998

Nominant: Steven Stewart

Registrant: Steven Stewart

Description: Quoted from the ICPS database:"It forms traps that are distinct from all other cultivars of this species, in that the traps are fused at the distal end, forming a cupped appearance when the trap is open. (...) The trap cilia on the margins retain their coiled position until after the traps open, displaying the circinate growth form. Despite these mutations, the traps still effectively capture insects."

Propagation: Vegetative reproduction

Etymology: Because of the strange form of the traps

A Dionaea 'Cupped Trap' plant

Background: Dionaea muscipula 'Cupped Trap' is another plant, in addition to the Dionaea 'Akai Ryu', that was isolated by Agristarts 3 of Apopka, Florida. Agristarts 3 isolated 'Cupped Traps' from tissue culture and, in 1998, distributed thousands of them before eliminating them from their stock. In addition to the obvious cupping of the trap, the leaf blades of 'Cupped Trap' are wider and rounder than a typical Venus Fly Trap's leaf blades. 'Cupped Trap' plants are hard to grow to a large size because the rhizome frequently divides. Also, the traps are typically fairly small, averaging one-quarter inch in length.
