Background: Dionaea muscipula 'Big Mouth' is one of the cultivated varieties that came into existence when an author published a description of a particular plant. In all likelihood, Tony Camilleri wasn't intending to create an official cultivar when he wrote about 'Big Mouth' in his book Carnivorous Plants. The reality is that 'Big Mouth' probably isn't worthy of cultivar status because its description is severely lacking and what little description there is definitely falls within the parameters of a typical Venus Fly Trap. I have definitely seen typical Venus Fly Traps that look very similar, if not identical, to 'Big Mouth'. However, the traits listed in the description, "large traps on very short leaves", along with the fact that the traps are deep red, is definitely visually appealing to most growers. Because of its trap coloration that is so deep red at times it can look purple, 'Big Mouth' is sometimes referred to as 'Red-Purple'.

I just bought a Big Mouth flytrap about a month ago. I know it's winter and it should be dorm. The plants traps are very small the plant itself is very small.I'm afriad it's to small or young to go dormant. I have my grow lights on 14 hours a day and I'm going to take it through the summer before I get it on a yearly dorm schedule. how long does it take for this clone (i'm guessing) to start a mature growing pattern? larg traps and such
