An 'Akai Ryu' in early spring
Publication: Carnivorous Plant Newsletter Volume 25, number 2, page 50, 1996

Web Publication: http://www.carnivorousplants.org/cpn/Species/v25n2p50.html

Registration Date: November 10, 1998

Breeder:Ron Gagliardo, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, before 1996

Nominant: Ron Gagliardo

Registrant: Ron Gagliardo

Translation: [Dionaea 'Red Dragon' {R.Gagliardo}]

Description: Quoted from the ICPS database: "Growth habit and flower morphology are typical for this species. The leaf petiole, blade and trap exhibit dark maroon to burgundy coloration. Any green coloration has only been noted around the center of the plant in mid-winter. The entire trap, interior and exterior, exhibits dark burgundy coloration throughout the year. Grown under laboratory conditions, where nutrient levels can be comparatively high, the plants still exhibit partial burgundy coloration in the traps and leaf blade."

Propagation: Vegetative reproduction (originally in vitro culture)

Etymology: After the red coloration of the plants (Japanese: "Red Dragon")

Background: Before 1996, Dionaea muscipula 'Akai Ryu' and other all red forms of the venus fly trap were very difficult to obtain. 'Akai Ryu' was the result of an attempt by Ron Gagliardo to create a red sawtooth plant, now registered as Dionaea 'Bohemian Garnet', from crossing Dionaea 'Holland Red' with a Dionaea 'Sawtooth' plant. Twenty seeds were grown in vitro and of the twenty, there were seven that inherited the all red characteristic from Dionaea 'Holland Red', but none of them inherited the Dionaea 'Sawtooth' characteristic. One of the seven that were all red, was superior in vigor and red color. It was to become the popular 'Akai Ryu', which is arguably the most widely distributed carnivorous plant in the world. So, in fact, 'Akai Ryu' is a direct descendant of Dionaea 'Holland Red'. Agristarts 3 of Apopka, Florida propagated the 'Akai Ryu' for commercial release.
