um, this is my first time hearing about the dormancy thing that venus fly trap does in winter and i like to make sure i do the right thing so could you tell me if the following is good enough conditions for my venus fly trap to go into dormancy. i live in canada and winters here are very cold so i have my venus fly trap indoors. can i just put in near my window beacuse as fall comes the temperture outside will drop slowly and the plant can go to dormant on its own right? and when winter comes i will close the window so it does not get too cold but its still only about 7-13 degress Celsius. and i will leave it by the window all day so the plant will get about 8-10 hours of sun light. is that ok? Also i like to ask one more thing, will a venus fly trap die if it eats too much like 1 big ant, 1 small bee, and 1 small fly in a week? if it does die, how can i stop it and if it does not die how long should i wait untill i can let it eat bugs again?

Thank you for the Venus Fly Trap dormancy guide!
It helped me loads, when winter comes this year i'll be ready! Last year when I put my only Venus Fly Trap into dormancy (my VFT lives indoors) it never came out again. It went into dormancy alright though, and I followed one of the guides from this website but unfortunately it died. I tried everything to bring it back but I waited nearly a year then someone threw the plant into the bin. I think it could have been mold that killed it as when I dug the plant up the Rhizome was all fuzzy. I'm not quite sure what happened to that plant so I brought another Fly Trap and I think I will try again, and hope it will come out of dormancy!
If anyone can help me to figure out what happened or could of happened to my older Venus Fly Trap please let me know.
Thanks again for the dormancy info! :)

What would happen if you put the entire potted plant in the refrigerator during the dormancy period?

That's how I do it. I drain off the excess water first, then put them in zip lock bags after a quick shot of a sulfur based fungicide then in the fridge they go.

What a wonderful guide. As a newbie grower, I will definitely be referring to this when the dormancy period approaches! Thank you very much! :D

This thread helps, I still wonder where I'll need to put my VFTs this November, especially the Paradisia and the Long Red Fingers that both live in a terrarium. I can't put any plants into the garage because I can't get my wheelchair into it. Since OP says the refrigerator isn't s good place for the plants, they won't go there either. Even here in Schenectady, New York about 175 miles north of Manhattan, I keep my bedroom thermostat set at about 50 degrees F. in the winter. So should I just put each potted VFT on the floor in front of the sliding glass door that leads to the porch? Where does the VFT terrarium belong? My other terrarium probably will stay on my desk, where a grow light lights it from the side, because I think California Carnivores told me that terrarium's plants don't need dormancy. Maybe they'll need the heating pad I've heard about from a nursery employee? Thanks. --Bill

Hmm, Tommy, maybe I'll need to buy a small refrigerator for the plants that enjoy a chilly nap. I still need to pick up my VFT terrarium at the local nursery where an employee planted both VFTs for me. Since she didn't tell me the species name of the Drosera she put in there, I might need to transplant it by November to keep it warm enough if it doesn't like an Alaskan vacation. ;) Oh, there's a Cephalotus in that terrarium, too. So I probably need to find the little guy a new home, eh?

According to this - my foyer, which is just a small 4x4 room that is in between my front door to my living room, should be a good place for my plants year round. There is no heater in there. it is warm and sunny in the summer and about a cool 35-45 degrees in the winter (It's usually 10 degrees warmer in the room that outdoors - I am in NYC). There is a small window in the room facing west with a small tree in near the front of the window. the room gets a good amount of spotted sunlight.
I usually kick my shoes off in there before I enter my house. Hopefully the foot smell doesn't kill them...lol

WHERE are you located? These should NOT be grown indoors in a terrarium.

I felt confused when I first asked about VFT dormancy. Now I know I'm confused. A CP nursery sold me a Paradisia VFT along with a terrarium bowl for it. It shares that bowl with a Long Red Fingers VFT, a Drosera and Cephalotus folicularis. Maybe I need to pot the VFTs. But so far, all four plants look healthy on my desk, where they're sitting in front of a grow light. I'm a little concerned, though, because a Paradisia petiole is still yellowing. As I may have told you, that leaf's trap was already dying when the plant got here about three weeks ago.

Hi,
Thanks for this guide; I'm looking after my boyfriends Venus while he is away with the RAF, and was concerned that I had killed his plant as several of the traps and stalks had started to turn brown and black. So the pictures were a relief. Can I just ask though, is it possible to tell the difference between a plant that is entering dormancy and one that is just dying? If so what are the signs? Thanks.
