Pressure cooker steam leak or not??

Ok so my new 4qt presto pressure cooker has the little rubber stopper like thing on the lid, the weight, and the autolocking pressure activated lock. Now the little rubber stopper moves up a bit and some steam leaks from it and the pressure lock, but eventually (few minutes) the weight begins to rock constantly.

Is that supposed to happen or is no steam supposed to come out before the weight moves??

What you describe sounds like a perfectly normal functioning pressure cooker to me.

I think I have been doing it wrong.

After reading several sites, i find that i should:

1. Lock everything in and put on weight
2. put on high heat
3. leave until it beins to rock vigorously
4. lower heat to the lowest setting where it still continuously rocks but gently
5. count the time from when it rocks vigorously

Yes, the five steps you wrote above are the proper procedure. In your original post, you didn't give as much detail, but from what is written there, it sounds basically the same as the five steps you just posted.
