My new VFT

Postby Rhumbullion » Mon Sep 10, 2012 11:00 am

Here is the red VFT I got. The tag on it said "Pink" though I cannot seem to find the breed type here. I need to snip some parts off of it, but I like to wait about 3 days before I do that to a plant I buy. The two dark traps have gotten darker over the day. I was scared at first, but the more I read the more I think it might be going dormant? We'll see. It has caught something, so I am somewhat confident it is not dead. I will be taking weekly pictures to compare the progress.

Nice plant.

Don't worry about some of the traps turning black. Your plant is not dying. If you look at the new growth coming out of the center, it is red and healthy looking. The blackening of traps is to be expected. This could be because the traps are just simply old and its their time to fall off or it could be from shock from the change in the environment. Read the basic care sheets on this site and you'll do great. If you have any questions just ask them and you'll have great info from experienced growers before the days outs.

Good luck with you plant and it'll be exciting to watch it grow.

The primary reason I had found this place is because I was looking up things about VFTs just to make sure I was not going to lose the plant. After reading the care and info pages here, I am feeling pretty okay about it. They seem fairly low maintenance. Even if they are not, they are not nearly as picky as nurseries and other sites lead you to believe.

I'll be pruning off dead bits today. :)

Before labeling it, you'd have to check with the place you bought the flytrap to confirm the cultivar (cultivated variety), but I believe it is very likely a Dionaea "Pink Venus" considering both the label and the appearance/growth habit of the plant.

It's most definitely not dead. :)

Just ensure you are giving it appropriate soil, water, and amount of light per the "Basic Concepts" at the link jwbates26 provided to you, and it should do fine.

It did say "pink." As much as nurseries do have their faults, Portland Nursery is the shiznit so I don't think they got that wrong. It was down to this one or one called "Big mouth."

I just pruned off the black traps and "leaves." Amazing how much healthier that can make a plant look. :)

Do you mean they sell Big Mouth too? That's a fantastic cultivar as well. Huge traps.

Yes. I do. They had plenty of...cultivars...(working that word in to my vocab now. It tastes a little funny. :3) Portland Nursery is all kinds of awesome.
