I wouldn't cut anywhere near that active node. Move an inch or two down the stem.

I wouldn't cut it off, just cut a slit in it, put some rooting hormone and damp sphagnum and bag it.

I would say on the opposite side of where you plan to cut, isn't that a node on the woody stem right below the active node??

There's only one active node. Leaves where there originally (I'm assuming

Couldn't it still work on that old node though?

I was saying can't you do the air layering on this node:

Yep I second that I wouldn't want to hurt any of the new growth at all and your not cutting all the way through just a little under half I would say

Yes. That's true. Should I cut under water?

You really shouldn't cut at all. Why risk such a rare plant simply over aesthetic preferences? Although I also dislike the long stems from cuttings, I much rather have a plant with a long stem then no plant at all

I don't know, everyone says to make cuts underwater. Something about how it makes a cleaner cut.

That's the point behind air layering... doesn't risk the plant because you don't cut all the way.
