Nepenthes Germinating Help.

Postby prnd2l » Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:40 am

I got some Nepenthes seeds and mixed 50 50 peat and sand. I used distilledw ater and or rainwater only to water the peat until it was moist. I scattered the Nepenthese seeds over the moist peat and put a dome over it to keep the humidity in. That was July 1st. I have seen no growth or anything. There is no mold or anything to sugest they are rotting or anything else. Just not any growth. I keep them moist but not wet. Of course they are wet when I spray the distilled water on them.

I tried again 2 weeks ago with a new, different, lot of seed. And so far no growth. These I used 50 50 peat and sand in 32 ounce deli tubs. Misting to keep them moist on a shaded window sill.

The same exact soil mixture I am growing drosera in, and vft types as well. They seem to be doing well. I just cant get any of the neps to hatch. I suppose that it could be bad seeds but they are supposed to be fresh. How long is too long to wait? I read many different things before I tried it, perhaps I tried the wrong method? The area is about 70 to 75 degrees constant, and maybe the cool is what is making it slow down or not germinate?

I also have tried tissue culture using the seeds. There is no contamination but even after this time, since July 1st, no growth there either. The VFT leaves I put in vitro are growing lots of new shoots, but no nep seeds.

Nepenthes seed germination can take a very long time; you need to be patient with them. Over a year is too long to wait, but some nep seed take about that long to germinate.

This page tells you what you need to know: http://www.carnivorousplants.org/seedba ... enthes.htm

Your temps are a little low - nep seeds need to be kept a little warmer (80-90 F; I'd guesstimate 75-80 for ultra highland seeds).

Other than that, as far as I can tell you're doing everything right.

I had read that guide and most other things that I could find online about sowing nep seeds. I just wanted to double check and make sure that I wasnt doing something that I wasnt noticing. Ill warm up the container a bit.

Veronis is correct, growing Neps from seed takes a lot of patience.

I sowed some N.ampullaria seed about 7 weeks ago and have only just noticed the germination of a few seeds. They were sown on rinsed & sterilised coco peat, covered and placed in a heated terrarium at about 20-25 degrees C with 14hr photo period. I also sowed some N.viking seed about the same time and have not had any germination at all even though these have experienced identical conditions.

Some Nep seed can also have a very short period of viability, is it possible that the seed that you are using was not particularly fresh?

It is possible that the seeds are not as fresh as they were claimed to be.

I did not sterilize the peat mixture that I used. I suppose that I could. There are no fungal growths visible, nothing like that, that is visible anyway.

I will keep planting and putting seed in TC until they rot or grow.
