VFT Seeds! How to germinate?

Postby Andrew » Wed Feb 24, 2010 1:53 am

I finally got my seeds. I was supposed to get 25 but 15 were completely crushed. So, I have 10 seeds, and I would like to try to get them to grow under my lights. I have 2 26W GE light bulbs. They have a 6500K color temp. What is the best way to get them to grow? I heard a small layer of pure destilled water has a good chance of making them grow. How would I go about doing this?
Regards,
Andrew

Look at my sealed jar method. That really works. I would put the crushed stuff in pure water in a sealed jar. You'd be surprised how many sprout.

Here is a picture of the seeds, I dont know if the quality is good enough for you to see, but most of them are crushed.

I'd add in the crushed stuff in a seperate pot..
There may be pieces big enough to germinate even small weak seedlings..

Goodluck!

Looks like the post sorting machines have done it again.

Reminder to all when shipping seed - use a padded envelope, or at least put a piece of bubble wrap inside a standard envelope to reduce the incidence of crushing.

From experience, i've found that old seed is more likely to crack and get damaged in the mail. I'd sow the remaining seed into a sealed jar of distilled water and keep it in a warm place to check viability. Nothing is likely to come from sowing the crushed seed, and it may even encourage the growth of fungus or mold.

They were in bubble wrap, but they were still crushed :\ Its been almost two weeks now. I dont have faith in them :P I should have ordered from somebody on the website, it would probably have worked better.

Don't loose hope just yet, I've had VFT seed germinate 2 months after sowing. Just keep the soil wet, push the seed into the surface so that it is making good contact with the soil, give the seeds good filtered light and be patient.

I bought a vft once from the store when I was younger and it had a big tall stalk with a white flower on top...I never knew until now that I should have kept that stalk and stuck it in some peat-lite! Of course, I had no idea at the time that tap water burned them to death every time. =( (That was early 90s and before my ez search/internet days).
