Hi

I been growing darlingtonia californica
For 5 years now
At first after reading every ones experience I was put of at first due to people saying there are hard to look after.
People said you have to water from above a couple of times a day to keep roots cool
I noticed a couple of points that the plant did not like
1st was getting repotted every year
The plant seem to sulk so I decided to repot every two years.
I use irish spagnun moss peat and perlite mix
I do not cool plants roots down with cold water
Due to my hours I work am unable to do that
So the past 5 year my plants are just kept in a water tray and topped up when needed
My plant are flourishing
Need to spit plant this year

Looking great! I've found that people make it more complicated than it really needs to be... CPs may be fussy, but they don't always need all the pampering people say they do. I'm growing n. hamata and darlingtonias side-by-side with great results.

I believe the problem is that summer nights are too warm in a lot of the country, which is when people need to start trying out those strange cultivation tricks to keep their plants alive. As long as the nights are cool enough, the plants should be able to handle quite hot summer weather.

Darlingtonia is actually quite easy to grow in the UK, warm in the day (in summer and if in a greenhouse) and cool at night

As with most CP's they get a reputation for being "finicky" because new growers get them and kill them off. Then they post about how hard they are to grow. If you take into consideration their natural habitat, and climate these are no different than any other plant to grow. It's just another myth that needs to be squashed like how finicky cephs are.
