I want to try raising an orchid-again. My first experience was going fine until I managed to rot the poor thing out. I tried to save it but failed miserably :(

A few days ago I spotted some nice sized, in bloom, labeled as "easy to grow" Orchids at Lowe's. It seemed that every one I looked at either had a mushy dark area on the bottom leaves or had some mushy looking roots in the clear pot.

Was I smart to not purchase one or am I just being "orchid gun shy"? What should I look for when buying an orchid?

When it comes to orchids, I personally always repot them when I get home, that way I can look at the roots, if the roots are all mushy you can return them. If you don't see white or green roots then they're probably not in good condition and mushy leaves are indicative of some kind of rot so I'd avoid those
