Is it safe to use water from a dehumidifier? We have one in our basement that we empty out every other day and we're wondering if that would be considered purified water?

Thoughts?

Thanks! :D

It's not purified. There will be some particulates in it, like stuff from the air and the humidifier coils. It should be low in dissolved solids and just fine for your plants. Many people use it.

Just clean the coils every once in a while and it should be fine.

I tested the TDS from my dehumidifier and found only 10ppm that to me is just about as good as distilled water. Thanks for helping me find a third source as well. I don't know why I did not think about that.

If it's just condensation (pure water from the air) and has only 10ppm TDS, why not use it? "Everybody says the same thing" is an argument that needs a justification or rationale. Everybody used to say that the Earth was flat. :)

What if the water is from my portable AC? How would I go about testing the PPM? Thanks for the help, as you can probably tell, I'm new =p

Edit: After doing some research, AC's act as dehumidfiers and mine produces quite a bit of water, now I just need to test the water just to be sure. Cool thread!

You'll need a TDS meter. They can be purchased for around $15.
Borrowing one from a friend this weekend, cant wait to see how the water from my AC tests. Hopefully its something under 30ppm..

I just tested my rain water... ran off the roof and into a barrel... 100ppm. I'm gunna cry. Sticking to the Distilled water for now I guess.

Since we've only recently started to get rain around here, it could be this batch of rain washed off lots of dirt, etc. from your roof. I would dump it and test again with the next rain. I will get ppm spikes in my rain barrel occasionally, although never near 100 ppm. The highest I've seen is 30 ppm. That was after an extended dry spell if I remember correctly. Usually it's 8 - 12 ppm.
