I have them in a mixture of 68% Peat Moss,16% Silica Sand and 16% Perlite. The Silica Sand will help keep the growing medium dry during dormancy and the Perlite will allow for airation. Also, the pot is 5 inches in length and this will allow the roots plenty of room to grow.

The final shot shows all 3 plants in one pot but with plenty of room for more Dionaea. You will probably notice Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss covering "Clayton's Red Sunset" that is because I have two leaf cuttings inside. This way if my cuttings strike, I will know which cultivar it is.

I took Matt's advice on leaf pullings and I hope they strike! I always have bad luck with leaf pullings.

Try it at spring. I think it keeps them better to pull. (won't die as easily)

I like those traps. I personally like green ones though.

Hi Lily,

Yes, you are right, Spring time is the best time to do pullings but I'm going to give it a try and hope for the best!
Just like you, I only used to like the green forms of vfts but I changed my mind once I got 'Holland Red' and 'Red Burgundy'; some of the reds can be absolutely beautiful.

Nice plants you have there. I will be getting myself a VFT this Sunday. As a first timer, I hope you give me advice as I have only a little knowledge and no experience on growing this. Right now, I am worried about dormancy.. As my country only experience summer, i will have to force my plant into dormancy. OMG! How i hate forcing things .. hehe WISH ME GOOD LUCK and wish you good luck there giovanni.

Hi Datter,

Thank you for the kind words and congratulations on your new plants arriving!

Since you live in a tropical rain forest climate, with June and July often being the hottest months, I would recommend using the fridge method to induce dormancy from November to February.
This will allow your plant to rest during November, December, January and February which are the wettest months due to monsoons. In March, you can put your plant outside and it should grow beautifully due to Singapore having relative humidity often around 90%.

I hope this helps and please ask should you have any more questions.

Mary,

I was able to obtain 'Holland Red' and 'Red Burgundy' from my hometown in Italy. I'm very lucky that after being in a box for two weeks they were able to survive.
