leaf Pulling details

Postby fouriej2 » Mon May 10, 2010 12:41 pm

Hi All
I have recently joined and would like your opinions please.
I bought my VFT in late summer/autumn. The intention when it was bought was to propagate it through winter by forcing it via means of leaf pullings in a home made propagation box. I did not want it to go dormant in a couple of weeks just to start of in spring with just one plant!
The VFT was initialy placed on my bedroom window sill but it did not do so wel. After reading that one possibility might be a lack of light I decided to put it inside the propation box. The lights are set on a 15 hour cycle and the temps are min 20 and max of 27 defrees C (or 68 Fahrenheit min and 80.6 max). (I ocassionaly (every 2-3 days) water it from the bottom) It is now doing very well with new traps forming every week.

My questions are:
1. Can I dig up the plant - take just 2 or 3 leave off and repot the original plant?
2. Do I need to risk digging it up or can I expose one side of the plant by taking away some of the peat on that side and gently pull the leaves on that side off.
3. Also would the temp's as above as well as the lighting schedule be fine for both the 'motherplant' and the leaves pullings?
4. I bought peat from a nursery with no indication of what peat this might be- it just says on the label 'for acid loving plants'
Do you think I can risk using this stuff? The nursuries in my area don't have clue about growing VFT and medium to use....

Regards
Jacques

Personally, I take leaf pullings using a toothpick. I just grab the leaf, "lock" the growing centre with the toothpick (horizontally! do not puncture it!)and pull. It comes out with a very reasonable part of rizome.
Then I just put it in sphagnum moss, under fluorescent lights, temp always above 20ºC...
Success guaranteed :D

This sounds like a great technique!

Thanks Simon I will give it a bash! I got another VFT yesterday from a colleague, all he wants in return is another plant in a year's time so I can now experiment and still have a 'backup' plant!
