i purchased a venus fly trap at a local store and eventually re potted it. I searched around and couldn't find any sphagnum all the stores are sold out so i purchased some jiffy pellets out of a grab bin soaked them in distilled water and planted my vft in it. after doing some research I found out that jiffy adds lime and fertilizer to the pellets.... is my vft going to be okay in what its planted in?

repot it immediatly. soak it in water half an hour and go to lowes and get some orchid moss guaranteed to be there.

i don't know what jiffy pellets are, but generally fertilizer is a big no-no.

if you can't find suitable moss, you can order some from the FlytrapStore, though i wouldn't want to leave the plant in fertilizer for long!

Thank you everyone I was able to find pure sphagnum peat moss only downside was I had to buy it in a 50 lb Bale

50 lbs? damn! that's okay, it will come in handy when your upcoming carnivorous plant addiction develops.

oh that 50 lber will be no problem before you know it LOL

Okay so I have it in the new moss after uprooting and rinsing, but now I've noticed some of the young immature traps are turning brown

Where are you growing the plant. It looks like it might be in a terrarium (aka death box ).

If you can give us some more details about how the plant is being cared for, such as where it's growing, how much and what kind of water is being used, how much light it's getting, etc., we should be able to give more helpful feedback.

you are correct it is in a terrarium death box. So first thing is first get it out of the terrarium I have plenty of sphagnum peatmoss just no perlite wood fish Rock work in place of perlite?

You must mean milled sphagnum peat, right? If you found a 50 lb bale of long fiber sphagnum moss, please let me know where!

Regarding your question, nothing will exactly substitute for perlite but it depends on what the fish rock is composed of. There's a decent chance it would also be harmful to the plant. If you can't find perlite at your normal hardware store, it can usually be found at a nursery. I've also seen it at walmart or you can order some online and shipping should be cheap cause it's light.

Okay so here's my new setup I've got my venus fly traps in a plastic pot I read online that you can substitute perlite with packing peanuts chopped up I have them in a Tupperware container with a little bit of water at the bottom distilled. I have them near our sunniest window and they also are under a Enviro Gro plant light 54k that's on a 14 hour timer

Does this setup look like it's going to work?

Im not an expert but it seems very unlikely. Venus Flytrap needs much stronger light source with wide spectrum. when it is winter they could be fine with your setup though.
other than that, I would not use water tray under the pot, so dissolved solids would have a way out and in the pot would'nt get too damp.
