When I went for a bag of that, they actually had Quikrete sand under that item number instead and acted like they knew nothing of Pavestone brand. Quikrete pool filter sand is also ok IF you soak and rinse it first.

I've used Quikrete before without soaking it and my plants were fine

Hmm, thanks for sharing, I've never noticed that after a year + with this stuff.

Well, Home Depot pulled the exact same trick on me, xr280xr. On their website, it said my local store had nine bags of Pavestone brand in stock, but when I got there, it was all Quikrete brand instead. ("Product may vary by store" in fine print at the bottom of the webpage.) After hearing about your experiences with Quikrete, I definitely passed on buying any of that.

So then I went to a pool supply store instead and found this:
I sure hope quartzite is the same thing as silica sand since the name of the company that manufactures it has the word "silica" in it. It was about 8 bucks for a 50 lb. bag so I bought it. Sure hope it's okay. I've had a little soaking in some rainwater for about an hour and it's only gone up from 3 ppm to 4 ppm, but I wanted to give it a whole 24 hours to soak to be sure. The sand itself is fairly white and the water hasn't really gotten very cloudy yet. Would I still need to rinse it before using it?

See, that's interesting because I've never had a problem with it, and numerous members on here recommended it to me when I was deciding what brand to buy! Good luck with the stuff you got

that is the same sand I use. I got it at the local pool supply too. I rinse mine just to be safe but doubt you would have a problem if you don't rinse it.

Well, my little jar has been soaking for over 24 hours now and it's only gone up to 6 ppm, so I guess I'm in the clear. Literally. I shook the jar up and the water didn't even get any cloudier than it was to start with.

So does the writing on the bag where it says "#20" mean the same thing as when you all talk about "20-grit"? Is that a good number? I can't remember what I've read was a good grit number to use and I can't find it again now with the search box.

20 will work just fine, but 12 is better.
