Is this a Venus Fly Trap?!

Hi guys,

On a recent trip to Amsterdam I was visiting the beautiful flower market, when I came across some Venus Fly Traps.
I always loved them and right there I decided to buy some seeds and grow one!
So far so good, the seeds are growing fine, but they are not similar to baby Venus Fly Traps photos that I have seen online ._.
The leaves keep growing with what looks like tiny trigger hairs, but when they are the size of the biggest one you can see on the photos, they just seem to stagger and not develop any more, and develop more leaves instead...

Please have a look at these photos, are these indeed Venus Fly Traps or have I been cheated?!

Thanks guys,

I hope to learn a lot from these forums :)

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but those are definitely not FlyTraps.

Check out Matt & Leah's online store at flytrapcare.com/store/ for the real thing.

Good growing,
Mike

Yes, you were definitely scammed, as the first leaf after the cotyledons are actual traps.

Lots of us have been scammed this way. My first every VFT set was like this too... my solution? Don't buy seeds. Order a seedling.

Or buy seeds from a verifiable source. Even then you need the Patience Of Job to start flytraps from seed and nurse them along for several years until you have a mature plant vs. just shelling out the cash and buying a mature plant to begin with.

If you want good quality Flytrap seeds .... Seeds that actually germinate, and actually grow real live Venus flytraps there are two great options. 1.) Flytrapstore or 2.) a seller named Sam1greentmb who you can find on Ebay. I wouldn't trust anyone else. I've grown lots of VFT's from seed and I've never been burned by somebody selling me seeds that grow poppies, marigolds, or various unnamed weeds like you have. But I have been sold plenty of seeds that never germinated. And like I said i'm an experienced grower. Buy from the 2 sources I mentioned and you can't go wrong. :D

Venus_gob, looks like you have some petunias instead of VFT.

gazuzu (OP), yours might be the same but for now they look like they could be some kind of lettuce or other edible greens!

Your kid will be much older by the time seed-grown VFTs are big enough to be fun for him, anyway. Just buy an established plant like others said.

young kids will not have much interest in growing them from seed -- my six year old and I are growing some sundews from seed and after she initially planted them it is like pulling teeth to come get her to look at the tiny seedlings LOL

"REAAAAAAAAAAAAL COOL DAD OK BYE"

if just starting out, buy a small "starter mix" of typical fly traps for cheat, or a nice looking young plant or two from a reputable seller. I'd trust seeds from a lot more than just the two places listed above, but for most bought i a regular store/market stuff unless I can see the plant I wouldn't bother
